10 January 2011, Washington DC – The Aklan Ati-Atihan of Virginia (AAAV) held its annual Sto. Niño & Ati-Atihan Festival on January 8, 2011 at the Chesapeake Conference Center in Chesapeake, Virginia. In its fourteenth year, the event enabled Filipino-Americans from Aklan and other guests to celebrate this renowned festival. Among the activities conducted was a spirited reenactment of the “Barter of Panay.”
Consul Emil Fernandez of the Philippine Embassy read the message of Ambassador Willy Gaa, who extolled the AAAV’s outgoing president, Rafalyn Tejada, for the association’s commitment and efforts in supporting various charitable projects. The AAAV’s news officers, led by Joy Asban as incoming president, were inducted for the years 2011 to 2013.
The AAAV was organized to promote the devotion to the Sto. Niño. It has also been a supporter of St. Matthew’s Church, Operation Smile, Physicians for Peace, American Red Cross, and other organizations in Hampton Roads and the Philippines. END
