Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for International Economic Relations Antonio Rodriguez led the Philippine delegation to the 2011 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Senior Officials and Related Meetings, which was held in Washington, D.C. last February 27 to March 12. Officials from various Philippine government agencies converged in the U.S. capital to dialogue with their APEC counterparts and discuss avenues for cooperation in a variety of fields including customs, agriculture, energy, trade, investments, electronic commerce, environment, labor and health. The Philippines is a founding member of the Asia-Pacific grouping and hosted the APEC Summit in 1996 in Subic.
As APEC host in 2011, the United States has identified the following priority areas: (1) strengthening regional economic integration and expanding trade; (2) promoting green growth; and (3) expanding regulatory cooperation and advancing regulatory convergence. The APEC officials’ second meeting will take place in Big Sky, Montana in May and their final preparatory meeting in San Francisco this September. This will culminate in the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which will be held in Honolulu in November 2011. END
