15/04/2011: PH Agriculture Officials and Representatives of Academe Undertake Training and Observation Tour

15 April 2011, Washington DC. A delegation of Philippine agricultural training officers and representatives from the academe went on an agricultural extension training and observation tour in the United States from March 28 to April 5, 2011 to learn about the United States’ land grant and sea grant system. Leading the delegation was Dr. Asterio Saliot, Director of the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI) and Dr. Miriam Pascua, President of the Don Mariano Marcos University.

Among the officials met in the Washington, D.C. area were experts from the United States Department of Agriculture, United States Agency for International Development, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, University of Maryland Sea Grant College, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, University of the District of Columbia, Montgomery Country Extension Office and International Food Policy Research Institute.  Other legs of their trip included visits to the University of Tennessee, Kansas State University and University of Southern California Sea Grant Program.

In their meetings, the group exchanged information and experiences on the activities of the land and sea grant universities and various programs on biofuels development, climate change adaptation and mitigation, e-extension and the “market maker” program.

Efforts are underway to enhance the agricultural extension system in the Philippines. The trip highlighted the important role in which Philippine state colleges and universities can further assist in extending agricultural and fisheries know-how to enable farmers and fishers become successful entrepreneurs and resource managers.

Other members of the delegation were Region XIII Center Director Dr. Nenita Sumile, Region XI Center Director Dr. Allan Alimodian, International Training Center on Pig & Husbandry Director Alexander Castillo and DA-ATI Extension Innovation and Training Division Chief Roberto Masbang.  USDA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture Program Director Dr. Catalino Blanche and Philippine Embassy Agriculture Attaché Dr. Josyline Javelosa organized the training program with the various American institutions.  END
