26 May 2011, Washington, DC – Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. hosted a reception in honor of former President of the Republic of the Philippines, the Honorable Fidel V. Ramos, at the Embassy on 23 May 2011.

In his introduction, Ambassador Cuisia extolled the former President’s unprecedented record with emphasis on the impressive growth of the Philippine economy during his term.

The respect and admiration that Filipinos in the United States continue to hold for the former President was evident with the sizeable number of Filipinos who attended the reception including former Delegate David Valderrama, the first Filipino-American elected in a state legislature in the US mainland, his daughter, Delegate Kris Valderrama and retired US Armed Forces General Tony Taguba. Everyone enjoyed the former President’s own brand of wit and humor.

Dubbed by Ambassador Cuisia as “the Philippines’ Chief Marketing Officer,” former President Ramos reminded his audience of the unique strengths of the Philippines such as its strategic geopolitical position and natural wealth. Calling himself as the “kuya” (older brother) of everyone, he gave a pep talk to his fellow Filipinos and encouraged them to unite and work together to achieve common goals for the Philippines.

Ambassador Cuisia also took the opportunity to brief the Filipino community on the Save Our Industries (SAVE) Act, a proposed bill that seeks to revitalize textile and gaments trade between the Philippines and the United States, and sought their continued support for its passage by visiting www.saveourindustriesact.org. The Ambassador also invited the guests to the 6th Ambassadors, Consuls General and Tourism Directors’ Tour to the Philippines on 17-20 July. -- END
