06/06/2011: Ambassador Cuisia Meets Delegate Sablan
06 JUNE 2011, WASHINGTON, DC – Ambassador Cuisia meets with Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan (D-MP), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on House Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans, and Insular Affairs of the House Committee on Natural Resources. Married to a Filipina, Delegate Sablan was elected in 2008 as the first nonvoting delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. At one time, there were as much as 27,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the CNMI. The number has fallen to 10,800 due to the economic situation in the Commonwealth.
Delegate Sablan expressed his readiness to co-sponsor SAVE Act and assured Ambassador Cuisia of his participation in the Philippines-United States Friendship Caucus. Ambassador Cuisia and Delegate Sablan also discussed the status of Filipinos workers in Saipan and the pending bill that seeks to grant a new immigration status to OFWs and other foreigners with US citizen children in the CNMI which was introduced by Delegate Sablan in April 2011.
