13/10/2011: Bayanihan to Perform in Memphis Festival
13 October 2011, Washington DC. The Bayanihan National Dance Company of the Philippines recently accepted an offer to perform during the Memphis in May International Festival 2012 Salute to the Philippines. The 2,400 seat Orpheum Theater will be the site of the festival’s cultural program.
The Philippines was selected as the honored country by the festival’s organizers, besting 19 other countries initially considered by the selection committee. The month-long affair, which has been held in Memphis for the past 35 years, includes educational, commercial and cultural programs.
The multi-awarded Bayanihan has performed in six continents, sixty-six countries and 700 cities worldwide since its founding in 1957. The distinctions it has earned include being the first Filipino group to break into Broadway and the first non-American dance company to perform at the New York State Theater of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts; first Filipino cultural group to perform in Russia and China; first to make an in-depth tour of South America; first Filipino dance company to perform at the World Showcase Millennium Village EPCOT, Disneyworld, Florida; and the only Filipino dance company to receive the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award for international understanding.
The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. is coordinating with festival organizers and government agencies in Manila to ensure a successful event. Filipinos and Filipino-Americans throughout the U.S. are especially invited to attend the symposia being organized, see the exhibits, savor culinary delights, and witness the amazing featured performances. Additional information concerning the event will be disseminated to the public as they become available. END
