October 26, 2011, Washington, DC – In observance of Filipino American History Month, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program hosted a brown bag lunch lecture of Professor Rick Baldoz, the author of The Third Asiatic Invasion: Empire and Migration in Filipino America (1898-1946) on 25 October at the Smithsonian Latino Center.
Professor Baldoz teaches sociology at Oberlin College in Ohio. He also co-authored The Critical Study of Work: Labor, Technology and Global Production and his work has appeared in Ethnic and Racial Studies, Du Bois Review, and American Studies. In his lecture, Professor Baldoz discussed the complex relations between Filipinos and the United States by looking at the politics of immigration, race and citizenship. He described the trials and hardships faced by Filipino workers in the 1920’s to the 1930’s in the United States brought about by American practices of racial exclusion. -- END
