21 November 2011, Washington DC. Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. served as the guest of honor during this year’s Ateneo Alumni Association of Metropolitan Washington D.C. (AAAMWDC) ball, which was held last November 19 at the Fairview Park Marriott in Fall Church, Virginia. This year’s gala commemorates the 150th birth anniversary of the Philippines’ national hero and Ateneo’s most illustrious alumnus, Dr. Jose Rizal.
Ambassador Cuisia extolled the officers of the AAAMWDC for their efforts in rallying their members to support the less privileged segments of Philippine society and staying true to the Atenean’s ideal of being a “man for others.” He sought the assistance of those in attendance to let their American legislators know of their clamor to see the SAVE Act bill passed and appealed to qualified individuals to register as overseas absentee voters for the 2013 Philippine national elections. The Ambassador also called on Filipino-Americans to raise their profile by taking part in U.S. electoral exercises and make their collective voices heard.
The dinner dance, which is held every two years, is the organization’s premier social event. The funds to be raised will benefit the Ateneo Scholarship Fund and the Philippine Jesuit Aid Association. A graduate of De La Salle University, Ambassador Cuisia contributed to the fund-raising effort by providing the winning bid to a painting of Jose Rizal, an item which was donated by Mrs. Myrna Lopez.
