23 NOVEMBER 2011, WASHINGTON, DC. At a meeting with Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. on November 3, 2011, Representative John B. Larson expressed support for the Save Our Industries Act (H.R. 2387), a bill that is being considered by the House Subcommittee on Trade of the Committee on Ways and Means. Representative Larson is a member of the said Subcommittee. He is the Democratic Representative for Connecticut’s 1st congressional district, serving since 1999. The district is located in the north-central part of Connecticut and is anchored by the state capital of Hartford.
Ambassador Cuisia thanked Representative Larson for his crucial support at this stage of the legislative process for the SAVE Act. Representative Larson appreciated hearing the Ambassador’s perspective on the Philippine garment industry. Presently, the number of bipartisan co-sponsors for the SAVE Act has jumped to 19 congressmen from only 5 when the bill was re-filed in June this year. During the meeting, Ambassador Cuisia also took the opportunity to brief Representative Larson on developments in the Philippines as well as the relationship between the Philippines and the United States, particularly on counterterrorism, defense partnership, regional development in East Asia, and trade.
For the 112th Congress, Representative Larson was elected by his colleagues to serve as the Chairman of the Democratic Caucus, the fourth-ranking position among House Democrats, whose job is to build consensus among their ranks. END
