19/12/2011: Typhoon Sendong Devastates Coastal Cities of Northern Mindanao

19 December 2011, Washington D.C. The Philippine Embassy wishes to inform those who have relatives and friends affected by Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi) that the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) has established an operations center, where queries may be directed.  The contact details of the center are (+632) 911-1406, 912-2665, 912-5668, and email address dopcen@ndcc.gov.ph.

According to the latest situation report provided by the NDRRMC, the death toll from the flash floods was set at 662 with 82 still missing as of today.  Over 167,000 persons in close to 200 villages were affected.

Most of the dead were from the port cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, located about 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the capital of Manila.

The country’s Armed Forces has dispatched personnel and equipment to the affected areas.  The government is also taking steps to prevent outbreaks of cholera, dysentery, dengue and respiratory problems particularly in congested evacuation centers.

President Benigno Aquino is set to visit the stricken zone tomorrow after ordering a review of the country’s disaster defenses.  He will personally oversee the ongoing relief efforts by the government and inspect the damages wrought by the disaster.

The impact of tropical storm Sendong is being likened to Ondoy (international name: Ketsana), which dumped huge amounts of rain on Manila and other parts of the country in 2009, killing more than 460 people.
