03/01/2012: Philippine Embassy Observes 115th Anniversary of Rizal Martyrdom

January 3, 2012, Washington, DC - The Philippine Embassy in Washington, DC commemorated the 115th anniversary of the martyrdom of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal with a flag raising ceremony on December 30, 2011 at the Embassy’s Romulo Hall. The Rizal Day event caps the year long commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Rizal.
Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General Domingo P. Nolasco led the Embassy officers and staff in the ceremony and delivered the remarks of Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. on the occasion. In his remarks, DCM Nolasco said, “In death, Rizal demonstrated true pride in being a Filipino,” indicating in his notification of sentence that he was pure indio and not “mestizo Chinese.” His solidarity with the people who suffered injustice and oppression was evident until his final days. DCM Nolasco added that Rizal, “is a hero who gave life to other heroes and he served as an inspiration to his fellowmen.” -- END
