02 MARCH 2012, WASHINGTON, DC. At a meeting with Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr., Representative Steve Chabot said that the Philippines and the United States “are allies and we need to work together with friends in the region.” Representative Chabot is the Republican representative for Ohio’s 1st congressional district, serving 8 terms (1995-2009; 2011). The district includes parts of Cincinnati, and borders both Kentucky and Indiana.

Representative Chabot said he visited the Philippines in 2007, and toured the facilities of two major Ohio-based companies - a Procter & Gamble plant in Cabuyao, Laguna, and a Convergys call center in Manila. During his visit to the Philippines, Representative Chabot met with then Philippine Secretary of National Defense Hermogenes Ebdane and high ranking U.S. and Philippine military officials at the opening ceremony of Balikatan 2007, the annual U.S.-Philippines joint military exercise.  He separately met with former Philippine Speaker of the House Jose De Venecia and toured the American Military Cemetery in Manila. Representative Chabot also met with representatives of the U.S. Commercial Service and Foreign Agricultural Service at the Embassy's Makati-based American Business Center for a discussion of the Mission's support to other U.S. firms, including the successes in the market of several small Ohio companies.

Representative Chabot is the Chair of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia, Committee on Foreign Affairs. Like Ambassador Cuisia, Representative Chabot is also a product of a La Sallian education, as the congressman was a graduate of the La Salle High School in Cincinnati. END.
