ORDER OF THE GOLDEN HEART. Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia Jr. confers the Order of the Golden Heart with the Rank of Pinuno to Al Santoli, founder of the Asia America Initiative (AAI), at the Romulo Hall on 7 May 2013. The national award, which was presented by Ambassador Cuisia, on behalf of President Benigno S. Aquino III, was in recognition of Santoli’s decade of unselfish service in creating bridges of peace and cooperation in impoverished and conflict-torn communities in the Philippines. The AAI Development for Peace in Mindanao program is recognized worldwide as a successful model for in improving relationships between Christians, Muslims and Indigenous peoples. Santoli’s work in building volunteer teams and humanitarian partnerships has rescued or improved the lives of countless thousands of through public health, education and livelihood programs. This includes providing medical treatment for adults and children suffering from cancer, blood disorders and rare genetic diseases.  He was a soldier, human rights monitor, refugee protection worker and award-winning author and journalist before creating the AAI in 2002. The Order of the Golden Heart is one of the highest awards the Republic of the Philippines can confer to foreign citizens who have rendered distinguished services or encouragement to the campaign for the amelioration and improvement of the moral, social, and economic conditions of the Filipino masses, and for volunteerism in the service of the Filipino masses.
