22/08/2013: PH Embassy Marks Labor Rights Week with Youth Forum

PRESS RELEASE
WDC-075-2013
22 August 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Philippine Embassy commemorated Labor Rights Week a few days early on 16 August when it hosted a forum in partnership with various United States government agencies that was attended by youth-students from the Philippines and participants from the embassies of Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

With “New Century Workers, Your Education and Work Matter” as this year’s Labor Rights Week theme, the forum was organized by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office and the Consular Section of the Embassy and was held in cooperation with the Wage and Hours Division (WHD) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the US Department of Labor; the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB); the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC); and the Migrant Heritage Commission.

In his remarks, Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia Jr. commended the four agencies for being instrumental in providing an enabling climate for a safe, fair, balanced and discrimination-free workplace and vowed to further strengthening the Embassy’s partnership with them.

“At this crucial time when various economic challenges are facing the United States, we can expect the youth sector to bear the brunt of these challenges, as they undeniably impact on their employment prospects, work circumstances, income and even education,” Ambassador Cuisia said.

“Because you matter to us, we, at the Philippine Embassy, would like to assist you in making your workplace, or future workplace, an avenue for your personal growth and fulfillment,” Ambassador Cuisia said, adding: “It is our advocacy to ensure that you, our young workers, are able to work in an environment that gives you both satisfaction and security, while cultivating a positive work ethic in you.”

The resource persons during the forum were Jennifer Kole, Acting International Coordinator, OSHA; Mindy Weinstein, Acting Director, Washington Field Office, EEOC; David Kelly, Deputy Assistant General Counsel, NLRB; and Mark Lara, District Director, Baltimore District Office, WHD.

Labor Attaché Luzviminda Padilla said the Embassy’s efforts to join the US government in celebrating Labor Rights Week is an offshoot of the joint declaration that the Embassy entered into with the Department of Labor and agreements it signed with its two agencies, the WHD and OSHA, that basically formalized the Embassy’s partnership and provided for collaborative activities on information sharing, outreach and training for Filipino nationals on their rights to proper compensation and a safe working environment.

Consul Arlene Magno said the agreements also paved the way for the Embassy to sign local alliances with the regional offices of the said agencies in the various states for jurisdictional coverage. The Embassy has so far entered into local alliances with the Florida offices of OSHA and WHD. The signing of the Embassy’s WHD local alliance on 5 August marked the start of its month-long Labor Rights Week activities. ###
