06/11/2013: FILIPINO DESIGNERS LEAVE LASTING IMPRESSION IN PORTLAND

Almost a month after, people are still talking about FashioNXT where the predominantly American audience was left in awe by the stunning collection unveiled by four Filipino designers.

“Our designers surely left an imprint as some of the people who were there keep telling me that it was a show like no other,” Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. said about the 2013 FashioNXT in Portland that featured designers Alan Del Rosario, Anthony Cruz Legarda, Francis Libiran, and David Tupaz.

“For Filipino designers to be showcased in what is considered to be the No. 1 fashion production outside New York City is no small feat,” Ambassador Cuisia said. “I believe that we should be having more of this across the United States.”

Ambassador Cuisia said he is proud that Filipino designers are making their presence felt in the US. He noted that Tupaz has dressed such celebrities as Lady Gaga, Kris Kardashian Jenner, Etta James, Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson and Mariel Hemingway.

Del Rosario’s creations, on the other hand, had been worn by Taylor Swift, Michelle Pfeiffer and Debra Messing while Francis Libiran had designed for Tyra Banks and Miss World Megan Young.

Ambassador Cuisia congratulated the US-Philippines Society for sponsoring the event, which was held in observance of Filipino-American History Month, in recognition of the continuing contribution of the Philippines to America’s rich cultural heritage.

"It was a colorful, beautiful, and exciting show of the fanciful, elegant, and the every-day practical, highlighting Philippine materials such as dazzling piña design and other elaborate products," said Ambassador John Maisto, President of the US-Philippines Society.

“Everyone was in awe with the fashion presentation.  Portland has never seen anything like it.  While models usually just walk down the runway, our models came down with drama,” said Filipino-American Community leader Carmen Stull.

"This is my second time to see a Filipino fashion show but I enjoyed this one better because it was like being in New York or Paris,” said another Filipino-American Community member, Fred Macalino. “The clothes made by Francis Libiran were so high fashion and daring and the rest were wonderful. I salute them all."

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales attended the event in a barong. His wife, Nancy, said she appreciated the collection of Legarda, which featured pineapple fiber dyed in various colors. Mrs. Hales also later purchased an outfit from the ready to wear collection of Tupaz.

Attendees also marveled at the exhibit of traditional Filipino gowns that was put together by the US-Philippines Society. The event also featured the Von Trapp Singers who gave a touching rendition of Bayan Ko.

“We are honored that the US-Philippines Society chose FashioNXT for the Philippine designer runway show,” said FashioNXT Executive Producer Tito Chowdhury. “That the show celebrates Filipino-American History Month makes it even more special.”
