10/03/2014: Forum on People Power Revolution Revisits Historic Days in EDSA

Washington, DC – In partnership with the Philippine Arts, Letters & Media Council (PALM), headed by Ms. Mitzi Pickard, the Philippine Embassy commemorated the 28th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution last February 25 with a forum involving prominent local personalities, who shared their personal experiences and thoughts on those historic days.

Providing the welcome remarks was Deputy Chief of Mission Maria Andrelita Austria, who explained that this year's theme, “EDSA 28: Kapit-Bisig Tungo sa Pagbangon”(In Solidarity Toward Recovery), realizes the importance of rallying people in the calamity-affected regions.  She noted that commemorative events in the Philippines were held this year in the Visayas, where President Benigno Aquino III also spent time with victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

The panelists included Dr. Bernardita Reyes Churchill - Professor of History (ret.) at the University of the Philippines, President of the National Historical Society & Philippine Studies Association, and Chairperson of the International Philippine Studies Council; Rick Kessler - Staff Director at the Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Government Affairs, Former Staff Director at the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and author of "Rebellion and Repression in the Philippines"; Jon Melegrito - Public Relations Officer of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations and National Coordinator of the Coalition Against the Marcos Dictatorship Inc. from 1978 to1986; and, Maurese Oteyza-Owens - Public Relations Officer of the Philippine American Foundation for Charities and member of the Movement for Free Philippines from 1983 to 1986.  Following the presentations, those in attendance were encouraged to share their experiences.
