WASHINGTON, D.C. — The World Bank’s Global Partnership for Social Accountability (GPSA) awarded Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman of the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) with the Award for Leadership in Social Accountability at a special ceremony held today, May 12, at the second annual GPSA Global Partners Forum in the World Bank’s Headquarters in Washington, DC, USA.

Secretary Soliman was one of seven outstanding individuals who were recognized in the ceremony.  The awards were handed out by Mr. Axel Van Trotsenburg, World Bank Vice President for East Asia & Pacific Region.

Established by the World Bank in July 2012, the GPSA aims to support civil society, governments and private sector to work together to solve critical governance challenges in developing countries by enhancing citizen voice and supporting responsive governments.

This is the first time the GPSA has recognized individuals in governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector for their outstanding contributions and influence in the field of social accountability as a means to eradicate poverty and foster shared prosperity.

“The award is a well-deserved recognition of Secretary Soliman’s committed leadership and dedication to the delivery of social services and social protection in order to empower the poor and the vulnerable in Philippine society,” Philippine Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. said. ###
