WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Philippines received an Excellence in Leadership Award as a medical tourism destination during an invitation-only VIP Gala Dinner at the 9th World Medical Tourism and Global Healthcare Congress being held on 25-28 September 2016 at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland.

The glass plaque honoring the Philippines as a medical tourism destination was received by Undersecretary Alma Rita Jimenez of the Department of Tourism and Minister Jose Victor V. Chan Gonzaga of the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. Also in attendance was Ms. Zeny Pallugna, Officer-in-Charge of the Philippine Tourism Office in New York.

In a statement, Minister Patrick A. Chuasoto, Charge d’Affaires, a.i. of the Philippine Embassy said, “The Philippines is honored by this excellence in leadership award. This is recognition of our steadfast commitment to improving our medical tourism program and providing high quality health services for all.”

The Excellence in Leadership awards recognize the global leaders and destinations dedicated to medical tourism and health tourism. The awards also honor the key countries highlighted and ranked within the 2016 Global Medical Tourism Index (MTI). The Philippines ranked 19th as a global destination, and 6th in Asia.

The MTI was launched in 2014 by the International Healthcare Research Center (IHRC) as a new type of country-based performance measure to assess the attractiveness of a country as a medical tourism destination. The development of the MTI was a multi-year, multi-step and multi-stakeholder approach. The “psychometric sound measurement” is based on a six-step methodological, statistical and index construction procedure.

The MTI construct consists of three (3) main dimensions (country, industry and medical facility, and personal) with thirty-nine (39) underlying indicators. It is the first index helping countries, public policymakers, healthcare and tourism industry, place marketers and underlying organizations and people to have an assessment of their place as a medical tourism destination. The MTI is the worldwide reference point on the attractiveness of countries as medical tourism destinations, rating and analyzing the state of a country as a medical tourism destination, how it is positioned and should be positioned to increase the prosperity of its population.

The Philippines has made great strides in globally positioning the country as the heart of Asia, combining modern technology and international standards in healthcare with the Philippine culture and tradition, highlighting the warmth of the Filipino people. ISO certification is a standard, and more hospitals and clinics have secured international accreditation from bodies like JCI, ACI, and UK Trent. Filipino medical and allied professionals are world-class. English proficiency and quality training, together with the warm, culturally sensitive, compassionate and caring nature of the people, offer a brand of service that is distinctly Filipino. ###
