At a live interview on CNN International’s “Your World Today” anchored by Rosemary Church on 03 October 2009, Philippine Ambassador to the United States Willy C. Gaa appealed to the international community for assistance to the ongoing relief efforts in the Philippines following the destructive aftermath of typhoon Ketsana. Ambassador Gaa said, “The Philippines needs all the help that we can get.”
Ambassador Gaa mentioned the extensive damage wrought by typhoon Ketsana that has rendered homeless more than 74,000 families in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces homeless, with a large number of these typhoon victims currently living in evacuation centers.
“This was an unprecedented event, a month’s worth of rain fell in just 6 hours.” Ambassador Gaa said when asked to comment on the extensive flooding experienced in Metro Manila at the height of the typhoon.
Ambassador Gaa noted that the Philippines had been placed under a state of calamity by Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to enable Government agencies and local government units to access resources and funds for relief and rehabilitation efforts. END.
