07/08/2009: Philippine Embassy Offers a Memorial Mass for Former President Corazon C. Aquino

07 AUGUST 2009 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Philippine Embassy offered a memorial mass for H.E. Corazon C. Aquino, President of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992.

Organized by the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., the memorial mass was held today at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle at 7:00 p.m. The mass was celebrated by Msgr. W. Ronald Jameson and concelebrated by Fr. Jose D. Opalda, Jr.

The mass was attended by more than 300 guests, including members of the diplomatic community, Filipino-Americans and Filipinos in the greater Metro DC area. Also present during the mass were relatives of former President Aquino, Rosemarie Aquino-Reyes and Benigno B. Aquino and their family.

In his homily, Fr. Opalda shared the piety and religiousity of the former president stating, "she was an inspiration to all Filipino people, not only [for] her courage to lead her people and restoring peace, justice, freedom and democracy by means of [a] peaceful and bloodless revolution, but also by living and witnessing her faith as [a] true disciple, follower and believer of Christ and her deep devotion to Mary, the mother of God."

Liturgical music was provided by the Ateneo Alumni Choir. END.
