14/04/2009: Filipino Topbills DC Production of Jungle Books as Mowgli

14 APRIL 2009 WASHINGTON DC – Fresh on the heels of being recognized as Outstanding Emerging Artist in the DC Mayor’s Arts Awards, Filipino Jason Ignacio is slated to attract further attention as he plays the central character in a Washington, DC production of Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Books.

Ignacio will play the man-cub Mowgli in CityDance’s original adaptation of the popular Kipling classic that blends movement, music, mischief and magic.

Jungle Books is described as an exploration of a “world of enchantment” and “a colorful show” perfect for the whole family.

The Washington Post has pointed out, “With an easy-to-follow narrative, imaginative costumes and bits of comic relief, CityDance Ensemble's Jungle Books...[is] fine kid-friendly fare."

Ignacio said he is “thrilled” by the opportunity to perform for a younger audience and to show Philippine artistry and excellence through dance to a wider audience in the United States.

Ignacio, a classically trained ballet dancer and originally from the Philippines, has been recognized by the artistic community in metropolitan Washington, D.C. as among the rising characters.

After being named Outstanding Emerging Artist at the 24th Mayor’s Arts Awards – the highest distinction given by the District of Columbia to outstanding individuals, organizations and patrons of the arts, Ignacio offered the recognition to his native Philippines.  Ignacio also thanked the Embassy of the Philippines for supporting Filipino artists.

Ignacio was also recently awarded the John F. Kennedy Center Millennium Stage Local Dance Commissioning Project for his work entitled “The Mountain,” which centers on the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines.

The Millennium Stage Local Dance Commissioning Project, a program that supports the local dance community by nurturing the creation and presentation of new dance work to a wide audience, gives the Commission Award each year to two local choreographers or companies.

CityDance’s Jungle Books will run from April 18 – April 19 at the Lansburgh Theatre, Harman Center for the Arts, 450 7th Street NW, Washington, DC.  The production will offer face painting activities before the shows and photo opportunities.  Ticket information is available at WWW.CITYDANCE.NET END.
