30/03/2009: ASEAN Washington Committee under Philippine Chairmanship Urges Greater Dialogue, Interaction with US Congress

30 MARCH 2009 WASHINGTON DC – Philippine Ambassador to the United States and ASEAN Washington Committee (AWC) Chair Willy C. Gaa urged greater dialogue and interaction between the 10-member Association and the United States Congress in order to achieve shared goals for greater peace, progress and prosperity in the Southeast Asian region.

In a joint ASEAN Ambassadors and Charge d’Affaires’ meeting here recently with Congressman Eni F.H. Faleomavaega, Chairman of the Sub Committee on Asia and Pacific and Global Environment of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Ambassador Gaa welcomed the opportunity to “further strengthen the linkages between the United States Congress and ASEAN and its members” and looked forward to a closer relationship with the U.S. Congress through the Sub Committee.

Ambassador Gaa noted the “marked change” in the United States’ attitude towards Asia, pointing out the first overseas visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was to Asia.

Congressman Faleomavaega, agreed with Ambassador Gaa’s observation and pointed out that for the first time in the US Congress’ history, a member whose roots is in the Asia Pacific is heading the Sub Committee on Asia and Pacific Affairs of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Congressman Faleomavaega represents US Samoa in Congress.

Congressman Faleomavaega emphasized the importance of continuing dialogue and further strengthening the lines of communication between the US and other nations.

Congressman Faleomavaega repeatedly invited AWC as a group or as individual nations to avail of the Sub Committee of Asia and Pacific as a forum and venue for airing concerns and issues that may impact the ASEAN or its member countries.

Ambassador Gaa expressed ASEAN’s collective appreciation to Congressman Faleomavaega and underscored AWC’s commitment to work closely with the Sub Committee. END.
