11/11/2008: Statement by His Excellency Willy C. Gaa Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines on the Celebration of Veterans Day
HIS EXCELLENCY WILLY C. GAA,
AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES
TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
ON THE OCCASION OF THE
CELEBRATION OF VETERANS DAY
11 November 2008
We join the American people in celebrating Veterans Day. The Philippines shares with the United States the value of recognizing and honoring the gallant men and women who have defended the nation against the enemy of freedom and democracy. Without our veterans, not only the United States but also many other nations would have succumbed to the onslaught of tyranny and oppression. Our veterans helped restore peace by winning battles in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and the other wars of our times.
As a key ally, the Philippines has stood by the United States in promoting and protecting peace regionally and globally. During World War II, Filipino soldiers serving under the American flag fought side by side with American soldiers and freed the Philippines and the Pacific from foreign aggression. I take this opportunity to once again commend our Filipino and American veterans for their noble service.
In this regard, we thank the United States Senate for passing this year the Filipino Veterans Equity Act of 2007 (S. 1315) with an overwhelming vote of 96 to 1. The said bill recognizes the service of Filipino veterans who fought during World War II. As we celebrate Veterans Day, it is quite apt to urge the United States Congress to take the few final steps in fulfilling the aspirations of our Filipino veterans.
